The new contract with Plastic Bank foresees the collection of a volume equivalent to 6 million plastic bottles in one year and the expansion of the ecosystem to the North Region of Brazil
Lord, a company member of Think Plastic Brazil, a portfolio of solutions for the plastic-converted products sector in the internationalization process for target markets, carried out through a partnership between ApexBrasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency) and INP (Brazilian Plastic Institute), has renewed its partnership with Plastic Bank in Brazil.
In the new phase of the contract, the goal is to double the volume of recycled plastic and further strengthen the communities of waste collectors in the country. Through the partnership, 6 million bottles will be collected, which will no longer pollute the environment by 2025. The operation is concentrated in the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Paraná, with plans to expand to the North Region of the country, consolidating this location as a new point of impact in the coming months.
Founded in Canada in 2013, Plastic Bank’s mission is to reduce global waste by encouraging the collection of discarded plastic materials and promoting positive social impact. In partner communities, the collected plastic is converted into income and social benefits, functioning as a form of exchange. Transactions are recorded on a blockchain-based platform, ensuring traceability, security and transparency. Collectors registered in the ecosystem receive a bonus for each kilo of material delivered, increasing their income by at least 40%.
To offset the plastic waste from its plastic films, Lord is starting its second year as a partner in the Plastic Bank program. According to Lord’s president, Herman Moura, “the renewal of this partnership reinforces Lord’s commitment to sustainability and positive social impact. By doubling our collection goal, we are expanding our role in the circular economy and promoting real changes in the lives of hundreds of collectors. We believe that innovation must go hand in hand with environmental responsibility, and this project reflects our vision of a more sustainable future for the packaging sector.”
The initiative ensures that all collected plastic is recycled, processed and converted into “Social Plastic”, Plastic Bank’s final product. After processing, the material can be reintegrated into new products and packaging, strengthening a circular supply chain.
For Plastic Bank’s operations director in Brazil, Ricardo Araújo, the expansion of the partnership with Lord enables significant advances in social inclusion and the reduction of plastic pollution.
“Each new stage of this partnership represents an important step towards a more sustainable future. By increasing the collection target, we are able to support even more communities of waste collectors, promoting income opportunities and training, while preventing tons of plastic from reaching the oceans. Lord has been a key player in strengthening this ecosystem and we have important expansion plans for 2025.”
In addition to the environmental impact, the contract renewal reinforces Lord’s commitment to the social development of the communities involved. Program members will receive food kits, ensuring food security for the collectors and their families. Another important initiative is professional training, which benefits collectors with computer classes or financial education, aiming to increase opportunities for digital inclusion and professional development.
Plastic Bank works to reduce plastic pollution in the oceans by contributing to the collection and recycling of waste in countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Egypt and Cameroon, as well as Brazil. Globally, its network members have recovered more than 156 million kilograms of plastic, equivalent to 7.8 billion bottles. Brazil plays a significant role in this effort, having contributed more than 7 million kilograms since the start of the operation.
For Lord, sustainability is a strategic pillar of its business. The company invests in several initiatives, including the Ecofilm line of sustainable films, which incorporates technologies such as the use of post-consumer recycled resins (PCR), materials from renewable sources, as well as mono-material and biodegradable films. In addition, the Eco Project socio-environmental program seeks to encourage the valorization of plastic and strengthen the circular economy throughout the production chain, involving both the industrial sector and public schools.
“This is a great initiative that once again positions Brazil at the forefront of ESG in the sector”, highlights Carlos Moreira, Brazilian Plastic Institute Executive Director & Think Plastic Brazil CPO.
